Rumi Nath, a Congress MLA from Assam was arrested earlier today by Guwahati Police in connection with her alleged links to the just cracked car-theft-racket. Rumi was arrested from the MLA hostel at 7 AM today and will be produced in the court at any point of time from now.
Rumi Nath has been under scanner over the allegations that she has arranged Assembly Premises Passes to Anil Chahan, a notorious car-lifter with more than 3000 theft cases on him. Gauhati High Court has already rejected both the anticipatory bail requests of Rumi Nath in this regard. Finally, she was arrested for links with car-theft gang under Criminal Conspiracy and Cheating acts of law.
"I am innocent. I have no connection with Chauhan, but only know his wife who was also a Congress worker. This is just a political conspiracy to defame me... I have full faith in the law of the land and will cooperate with the police at every step. I am not absconding. Seeking anticipatory bail does not mean, I am guilty. If I am proved guilty, I am ready to go to prison", said Rumi at yesterday's press conference.
Rumi Nath, the controversial legislator has hit the headlines first by leaving her doctor husband Rakesh Singh and their daughter to convert into Islam and marry a departmental MLA called Jacky Zakir. Later, she filed a complaint against Zakir for domestic violence and got him arrested last year. The whole car-theft-racket busted with the arrest of Zakir and Chauhan earlier this month and the Police has been on a search for Rumi Nath since then!
